A  lawyer charges for "fees and costs": these are the fees for the lawyers work, for administrative work and judicial costs. These fees and costs are periodically presented to the client .

The fees are not only the compensation for the intellectual work of the lawyer, but they cover also the fixed costs of the office, e.g. books, judicial databases, rent, informatics and infrastructure.
Unless otherwise agreed upon, the fees are calculated by 195,00 EUR per hour + 21 % VAT, with a minimum-charge of 3 minutes (0,05 hour). The lawyer will ask you to pay in advance, and the first payment will normally be 1.500,00 EUR, all this related to how important, urgent, and difficult the file is.
When a case is brought to court, the belgian law states that only a (small) part of the fees of the winning party have to be paid by the losing party.

The judicial costs (summons, bailiff, collection of judgements, judicial secretary, registry ...) will be charged seperately, without additional charges ('cost price').

Administrative costs are the material costs of the office. They are charged as follows (exclusive of 21 % VAT):
+ start of a new file, inclusive start of data, informatics, structuring of the file: 55,00 EUR
+ filecost per year begun: 55,00 EUR
+ typing per page black&white: 12,00 EUR 
+ domestic outgoing telefax: 1,00 EUR per page
+ foreign outgoing telefax: 1,00 EUR per page, plus extra, according to the duration and distance
+ domestic/foreign incoming telefax: 1,00 EUR per page
+ foreign outgoing telephone: 5,00 EUR per call, plus extra, according to the duration and distance
+ photocopy (time included): 0,50 EUR  per page
+ scanning of images or text: 25,00 EUR per scan
+ travel-costs: fees per hour + 1,00 EUR per kilometer
+ administration-tasks (secretariat) such as making an inventory, taking registered mails to the post office, ...: 25,00 EUR per hour.
